Why isn't my train showing on the map?

2 min readUpdated April 19, 2026

If your train isn't appearing on the map, one of a few things is usually going on.

1. The network doesn't broadcast real-time positions

trains.fyi shows a train in real time only if the operator publishes a live data feed (GTFS-Realtime or equivalent). Many smaller commuter and intercity networks publish only the schedule, not live positions.

When that happens, you'll typically see a ghost train — a scheduled vehicle drawn at its expected position based on the timetable. Ghost trains are a best-effort estimate and may differ from where the train actually is.

2. The feed is delayed or temporarily down

Even networks with real-time feeds occasionally drop offline. trains.fyi polls feeds about once per minute, but the upstream provider may add latency of its own. Wait a minute or two and refresh.

3. The train hasn't started its trip yet

Most feeds only report a vehicle once it's actively in service. A train scheduled to depart in 20 minutes usually won't appear on the map until it leaves the yard or starts boarding.

4. The train has finished its trip

Once a vehicle completes its run, it's removed from the map within a minute or two.
