The Ghan is Journey Beyond's transcontinental tourist train, crossing Australia's outback between Adelaide and Darwin via Alice Springs. This is a ghost train: there is no live GPS or GTFS-RT feed, positions are simulated from the published schedule.
The story of
The Ghan takes its name from the Afghan cameleers who once supplied the route before the railway existed. The original narrow-gauge Central Australia Railway opened in stages from 1878, but only reached Alice Springs in 1929; the modern standard-gauge extension to Darwin, completing the full transcontinental route, wasn't finished until 2004.
