The story of
The Montreal Metro opened in 1966 as part of the city's preparations for Expo 67. The system was notable for its distinctive rubber-tired trains and award-winning station architecture. The initial network consisted of 26 stations on three lines. Major expansions occurred in the 1970s and 1980s, including the addition of the Blue Line. The STM has continued modernizing its fleet and infrastructure while maintaining the system's unique architectural heritage. The Metro is recognized for its public art program, with each station featuring original works by Quebec artists.
