Rome's tram network, operated by ATAC, is one of the oldest in Europe and still runs alongside the city's metro and extensive bus network.
The story of
Rome's first horse-drawn trams appeared in the 1870s, electrifying by the turn of the century, and the network once spanned far more of the city before many lines were replaced by buses in the mid-20th century. Today ATAC (Azienda Tramvie ed Autobus del Comune di Roma) operates a compact surviving network of four lines through the historic center and outer districts, alongside the Metro and bus systems it also runs.
