The story of

Poland National Rail

Poland's rail network dates to the 1840s and grew into one of Europe's densest, though decades of state ownership under PKP left it fragmented by the 2000s as regional voivodeships spun up their own operators. Today PKP Intercity runs long-distance and international services while over a dozen regional companies — Polregio, Koleje Mazowieckie, SKM Warszawa, SKM Trójmiasto, Koleje Śląskie, Koleje Dolnośląskie, and others — cover commuter and regional routes, all running on infrastructure maintained by state operator PKP PLK.
