PATH is a rapid transit system connecting Manhattan with Hoboken, Jersey City, and Newark under the Hudson River.
The story of
PATH traces its roots to the Hudson & Manhattan Railroad, which opened its first tunnels under the Hudson River in 1908, decades before comparable underwater rail crossings. The line struggled financially through much of the 20th century and was taken over by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey in 1962, which rebranded it as PATH (Port Authority Trans-Hudson) and rebuilt the World Trade Center station as its Manhattan terminus. The WTC station was destroyed in the September 11, 2001 attacks and rebuilt as the Oculus, reopening in phases through 2003-2016. Today PATH carries commuters between four New Jersey terminals and Midtown/Lower Manhattan around the clock.
