The story of
NMBS (Dutch) / SNCB (French) was formed in 1926 as Belgium's national railway company, taking over operations from a patchwork of earlier private and state railways dating to Belgium's 1835 rail pioneer era -- continental Europe's first railway line. Today it operates a dense national network radiating through Brussels' three main stations (Midi, Central, Nord), connecting every major Belgian city with frequent Intercity and local services.
