MÁV operates Hungary's national railway network, with intercity, regional, and international services radiating from Budapest, alongside GYSEV services in the west of the country.
The story of
Magyar Államvasutak (MÁV) was founded in 1868, shortly after the Austro-Hungarian Compromise, and grew into one of Central Europe's densest rail networks centred on Budapest's three grand terminals: Keleti, Nyugati, and Déli. Passenger services are operated by MÁV-START, while GYSEV, a joint Hungarian-Austrian railway dating to 1872, serves the western border region. Hungary's position in the middle of Central Europe makes the network a major corridor for international trains to Austria, Slovakia, Czechia, Romania, Croatia, and Serbia.
