The story of
Originally state-run as TrainOSE, Greece's national rail operator was privatized and acquired by Italy's Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane group in 2017, rebranding as Hellenic Train in 2022. The network spans roughly 2,300 route kilometres connecting Athens, Thessaloniki, and other major cities. Following the fatal Tempi rail disaster near Larissa in February 2023, the Greek government fast-tracked a nationwide satellite-based train tracking system, railway.gov.gr, which launched in 2026.
