Gråkallbanen is Trondheim's tram line, running from St. Olav's Gate through Byåsen to Lian — the only tram system in Norway outside Oslo.

Gråkallbanen

The story of

Gråkallbanen

A/S Graakalbanen was founded in 1916 to build a tramway from central Trondheim toward the Gråkallen mountain, with the first stretch from St. Olav's Gate to Munkvoll opening on July 18, 1924. The line was extended to Ugla in 1925 and reached its current terminus at Lian in 1933. It was the city's only surviving tram line after Trondheim closed the rest of its tramway network in 1988, saved by a political deal that established a dedicated operating company. Today it runs as Line 9, served by Class 8 articulated trams under AtB's regional transit network.
