The story of

Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority

GCRTA was established on December 30, 1974, assuming control of the Cleveland Transit System on September 5, 1975. Its predecessor system opened the Red Line in 1955, the first rapid transit line in the western hemisphere to connect a city's downtown directly to its major airport. The Blue and Green Lines trace back to a 1913 interurban route to Shaker Heights, later rebuilt and folded into the rapid transit network by 1981, with the Waterfront Line added in 1996 to serve North Coast Harbor and the Gateway Sports and Entertainment Complex. All four lines converge at Tower City Center in downtown Cleveland.
