The story of
Edmonton's LRT system opened in 1978, becoming Canada's first modern light rail system. The initial line was built to serve the 1978 Commonwealth Games, running from Belvedere to Central Station. The system has since expanded significantly, with the Capital Line running from Clareview to Century Park and the Metro Line branching northwest to NAIT. The Valley Line Southeast, a low-floor urban style LRT line, began operations in 2023, adding new connectivity to Mill Woods and downtown Edmonton.
