The story of
Comboios de Portugal traces its roots to Portugal's 19th-century railway companies, nationalized and consolidated over the 20th century into today's state operator. CP runs the flagship Alfa Pendular tilting-train service between Lisbon, Porto, Coimbra, and the Algarve, Intercidades regional expresses, and dense suburban networks around Lisbon (Linha de Sintra, Linha de Cascais, Linha da Azambuja) and Porto.
