The story of
Căile Ferate Române (CFR) has run Romania's railways since 1880, building on the country's first line opened in 1854 between Oravița and Bazias. The current passenger operator, CFR Călători, was split off as a separate company in 1998 and remains the only national-level passenger carrier, connecting nearly all of Romania's cities and towns over one of Southeastern Europe's densest rail networks.
