Cairo Metro

The story of

Cairo Metro

Cairo Metro opened on September 27, 1987, becoming the first metro system on the African continent and in the Middle East. Line 1 (Red) originally ran between Helwan and Ramses Square, developed with French and Soviet engineering support, and today extends 44 km between Helwan and New El Marg. Line 2 (Blue) opened in 1996 between Shubra El Kheima and El Mounib, partially using Egyptian-built rolling stock. Line 3 (Green) opened in 2012 and has been expanded incrementally through May 2024, now running from Adly Mansour to Rod El Farag Corridor and crossing the Nile to serve Zamalek and Cairo University. The system carries roughly 3 to 4 million passengers per day across 84 stations and 106.8 km of track. Owned by the National Authority for Tunnels under Egypt's Ministry of Transport, Line 3 is operated under a 15-year concession by RATP Dev Mobility Cairo. Line 4, a fourth line linking Haram District to New Cairo, began construction in 2024.
