Trenes Argentinos is the commuter rail network serving the Buenos Aires metropolitan area, operating seven lines that connect the city center with its suburbs.
The story of
Buenos Aires' commuter rail network dates back to the late 19th century, when British-owned companies built an extensive railway system radiating from the capital. After nationalization in 1948 under President Perón, the lines were grouped under Ferrocarriles Argentinos. Following privatization in the 1990s, various concessionaires operated the lines with mixed results. After the tragic Once station crash in 2012 that killed 51 people, the government created Trenes Argentinos Operadora Ferroviaria (SOFSE) to gradually take back operations. Today, SOFSE operates all seven metropolitan lines — Mitre, Sarmiento, Roca, San Martín, Belgrano Sur, Belgrano Norte, and Urquiza — carrying over 300 million passengers annually and undergoing significant modernization with new rolling stock and electrification projects.
