The story of

MTA (New York City Subway)

The New York City Subway opened in 1904 with the Interborough Rapid Transit Company (IRT). The system expanded through the early 20th century with the Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Corporation (BMT) and Independent Subway System (IND). In 1953, these were unified under the New York City Transit Authority, now part of the MTA. The subway has shaped New York's development for over a century, operating 24/7 and carrying over 5 million daily riders pre-pandemic. Its extensive network includes express and local services, making it one of the world's most complex transit systems.
