Swedish Rail

The story of

Swedish Rail

Sweden's railway history dates back to the 1850s when the first state railways were built connecting major cities. Statens Järnvägar (SJ) was the national operator for over a century before the Swedish rail market was gradually deregulated starting in the 1990s. Today, SJ remains the primary intercity operator, running high-speed X 2000 and SJ 3000 trains between Stockholm, Gothenburg, Malmö, and other major cities. Regional rail services are operated by various county transit authorities including SL (Stockholm), Skånetrafiken (Skåne), and Mälartåg (Mälardalen). Sweden's rail network spans from Malmö in the south to Kiruna above the Arctic Circle, with the iconic Inlandsbanan running through the country's interior.
