The Buenos Aires Subte is the oldest metro system in Latin America and the Southern Hemisphere, serving the Argentine capital with six lines and a premetro light rail.
The story of
The Subterráneo de Buenos Aires, universally known as the Subte, opened on December 1, 1913, making it the first underground railway in Latin America and the entire Southern Hemisphere. Line A originally ran between Plaza de Mayo and Plaza Miserere using wooden La Brugeoise cars that remained in service until 2013 — a century of continuous operation. The network expanded through the mid-20th century with Lines B through E, but growth stalled for decades due to economic instability. Line H, the first new line in over 60 years, began service in 2007 and continues to be extended. The Premetro (Line E2), a light rail line in the southern suburbs, has operated since 1987. Operated by Emova (formerly Metrovías) under concession from Subterráneos de Buenos Aires Sociedad del Estado (SBASE), the system carries approximately 300 million passengers per year across 90 stations.
