SNCF operates France's national rail network, including high-speed TGV InOui and OUIGO services, Intercités long-distance trains, and TER regional rail across the country.
The story of
The Société nationale des chemins de fer français (SNCF) was created in 1938 as a nationalised railway company. France pioneered European high-speed rail with the TGV, which entered service between Paris and Lyon on 27 September 1981, reaching 260 km/h in commercial operation. The network expanded rapidly through the 1990s and 2000s with new lignes à grande vitesse (LGV) radiating from Paris to Marseille, Bordeaux, Strasbourg, and beyond. On 3 April 2007, a modified TGV set the current world speed record for conventional rail at 574.8 km/h. Today SNCF operates over 30,000 km of track, with TGV InOui and low-cost OUIGO serving major cities at up to 320 km/h, Intercités providing long-distance conventional services, and TER networks covering regional connections across all of mainland France.
