Renfe is the national railway operator of Spain, providing high-speed AVE, long-distance, and regional rail services across the country.
The story of
Renfe (Red Nacional de los Ferrocarriles Españoles) was established in 1941 following the nationalization of Spain's broad-gauge railways. It has since evolved into one of Europe's leading rail operators, notably launching the high-speed AVE service between Madrid and Seville in 1992 for Expo '92. Spain now has the second-largest high-speed rail network in the world after China, with AVE trains reaching speeds of 310 km/h. In 2005, Renfe was restructured, separating train operations (Renfe Operadora) from infrastructure management (Adif).
