The story of

Maryland Light Rail

The Baltimore Light Rail began operations in 1992, providing north-south service between Hunt Valley and Glen Burnie. The system was expanded in 1997 with branches to Penn Station and BWI Airport. Built largely on existing rail rights-of-way, the Light Rail has played an important role in Baltimore's transit network, connecting suburban areas with downtown Baltimore, Camden Yards, Penn Station, and BWI Marshall Airport. The system operates primarily at street level and features both dedicated rights-of-way and street-running segments.
