Express, Superfast, and Mail services forming the backbone of India's long-distance rail network, connecting thousands of cities and towns across the subcontinent.
The story of
Express and Mail trains have been the workhorses of Indian Railways since the colonial era. The Mail trains, originally designed to carry mail between major cities, evolved into important passenger services. Superfast trains, introduced in the 1970s with a surcharge for higher speeds (above 100 km/h average), now form a large portion of long-distance services. Together, these ~2,000 trains connect virtually every major town in India.
