The story of

Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority

Capital Metro was established in 1985 to provide public transportation for Austin and surrounding communities. The MetroRail Red Line, a 32-mile commuter rail, began service in 2010, connecting downtown Austin to Leander. CapMetro has continued to expand its services, including plans for new light rail lines and rapid bus routes as part of Project Connect, a major transit expansion initiative approved by voters in 2020.
