The story of
Sound Transit was created in 1996 to build and operate high-capacity public transportation in the Central Puget Sound region. Link light rail began service in 2009 with a line between downtown Seattle and Sea-Tac Airport. The system has since expanded northward to the University of Washington and beyond, with major extensions planned to reach Lynnwood, Federal Way, and the East Side. Sounder commuter rail service began in 2000 and serves the north and south corridors.
