Irish Rail

The story of

Irish Rail

Iarnród Éireann was established in 1987 as part of the restructuring of Córas Iompair Éireann (CIÉ), Ireland's national transport authority. Rail services in Ireland date back to 1834 when the Dublin and Kingstown Railway opened as one of the earliest public railways in the world. The network expanded throughout the 19th century, connecting major cities and towns across the island. Today, Irish Rail operates InterCity services linking Dublin with Cork, Galway, Limerick, Waterford, Belfast, Sligo, and Westport, as well as the electrified DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit) coastal commuter line and suburban commuter services radiating from Dublin.
