The ION light rail system began operations in 2019 after years of planning and construction. The system was designed to support the region's growth and development while connecting major destinations including universities, hospitals, and commercial centers. Phase 1 of the project connects Waterloo to Kitchener with modern electric light rail vehicles. The system represents a major investment in sustainable transportation for the region and has already sparked significant transit-oriented development along its corridor.
