The story of
Budapest's first underground railway, the Millennium Underground (M1), opened in 1896 as continental Europe's first metro line and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The network expanded with M2 (1970), M3 (1976), and M4 (2014). Budapest also operates one of Europe's largest tram networks, with iconic routes along the Danube, and five HEV suburban rail lines connecting the city to surrounding towns.
